How To:Make A Bed

Directions for making a bed

  1. Assemble Bed Frame.

  1. Cut 2 side rails, 6’ long, 2x6 wood
  2. Cut 2 38” long rails, 2x6 to be used as the head and foot boards
  1. Lay out the bed, putting the short pieces on the outside, the 6’ pieces on the inside.
  1. Use 4 angle irons to attach the pieces.  Use the angle irons to mark the holes on the wood where you will drill.
  1. Drill the holes to accommodate the angle irons
  1. Use ¼” carriage 2 inch-long bolts with lock washers and nuts to attach the angle irons to the bed frame pieces.  From the outside of the frame, use a hammer to push the bolts through the wood frame and angle iron.  On the inside of the frame, add on a washer and screw on nut using a ratchet wrench to tighten frame together.  You now have a frame.
  1. Assemble the Caster Boards

  1. Cut 2, 38” long 2x6 pieces to use for attaching the casters.
  1. Position Caster edges 4” from the edges of the 38” boards and mark holes for drilling.  Drill the holes in the caster boards.
  1. Attach the casters to the caster boards.  Use ¼” Hex bolt 2” long with ¼” washers, ¼” lock washers, and ¼” nuts to attach casters to the boards.
  1. Measure 11” from ends of main bed frame where you will attach casters boards to the frame.  Use ¼” lag bolts (3” long) and attach the caster boards to the frame.
  1. Handles and Handle Braces

  1. Cut 4, 4’ long, 2x4 pieces to be used as the handle braces.
  2. Measure 1 ½” in from the edge of one side of each 2x4.
  1. Using a 1 5/8” Paddle Drill Bit, cut holes into one end of each of the four 2x4’s.    File down the rough edges of the holes
  1. With the bed frame upside down, mark the location of the handle brace by placing it centered against the caster board
  1. Holding the 2x4 in place on the bed frame, drill the holes for the fasteners
  1. Attach the braces with 4 carriage bolts, 2 on each side.    Be sure the carriage bolt head is on the outside of the bed frame.  Use a hammer to push the bolt through the drill holes.
  2. Fasten with a washer, lock washer and nut from the inside of the frame.
  1. Cut 2 4’ long 1 ½” dowels that can be slid through the holes in the handle braces.
  2. Screw the dowels into place in the handle braces with 1 1/2'” sheet rock screws.
  1. Bed floor

  1. Use one 4x8 sheet of OSB, ½” thick.
  2. Cut it 38” wide by 75” long.
  1. Cut the corners out to fit the handle braces, 71/2” x 3: in each corner.
  1. Attach the bed floor to the bed frame with 1 ½” sheet rock screws.
