The Queen City Rotary Announces Three "Service to Youth" Award Winners
8 June, 2009
On Thursday, June 4, 2009, The Queen City Rotary announced three winners: Mr. Frank Tansey, Mr. Douglas Smith and Lt. Bill Barry as the 2009 'Service to Youth' Awardees.
Presented by Ms. Julie Baron, Frank Tansey is noted to be 'indescribable' when it comes to the time and effort he puts into the Make A Wish Foundation. His passion is evident in every aspect of his involvement, ensuring each child has the best experience possible during their 'Wish'. Each child has a special bond with Frank, calling him Uncle Frank, he is constantly making them smile. Utilizing his resources as VP of National Sales for Pepsi, the corporation has donated more than $500,000 over the years. During one "Wish" experience, a child indicated that it could only be better if his grandmother were present. That evening, after the child went to bed, Frank drove to Maine and returned with his grandmother so she was present the next morning when the child awoke.
Presented by Mr. Denny Ryan, Douglas Smith has spent countless hours of his time as a coach, a ref, a timekeeper and as a key Board member for the NH Catholic Youth Organization. Tirelessly helping to give the kids a chance to play ball and stay off the streets, he uses his vacation time from work as a Financial Services Associate with Municipal Resources, to cover every round of play during the Red Ryan Golf Tournament for Youth up to 26, every year. A few years ago, Doug found out that a child was in of kidney transplant. He had himself tested to determine if he was a match, found that he was, and immediately agreed to donate his kidney to her.
Presented by Mr. Brian Tremblay for Ms. Marguerite Wagling, Lt. Bill Barry has an amazing capacity to connect with children as well as to bring others together for the same cause. He has volunteered 26 years of his life to organizations such as the Manchester Pony league, Babe Ruth Baseball, Central Little League, Manchester Blue Devils Football, Youngsville Hawks Football, Manchester South Sabres Football and AAU Basketball. Additionally he has been a volunteer or member of the Board of Directors for the Webster House, Friends of Manchester Athletics and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Other local Charities which have benefited from Bill's hard work are Make-A-Wish Foundation, Girls and Boys Club of NH, Challenger League, Special Olympics, Salvation Army, Juvenile Diabetes, Monarchs Care Foundation, Manchester PAL's, Girl and Boy Scouts, David's House, CHAD and The Kidney Foundation. As Deputy Sheriff for Hillsborough County, his job description does not include searching for lost children, so he has spent his own time doing so. He has been nationally recognized for his work in locating two missing children from Nashville, TN, found in Mexico and for locating a missing Manchester boy, found in Texas. He now holds a position on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Advisory Board.
The Queen City Rotary is proud to name these three distinguished members of our Community the 2009 "Service to Youth" Awardees.
